When a buyer asks the question, be the answer
Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) is the work of making your company the name that ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews, Perplexity and Copilot give when somebody asks the question your products answer.
The way buyers research suppliers is changing. An engineer or a procurement manager used to type a phrase into Google and work down a page of links. Increasingly they ask a question in plain English and get one written answer, with two or three companies named in it.

A page of links. The buyer does the reading.
Who makes stainless steel pressure vessels in the UK?
Three established UK manufacturers to consider are Company A, Company B and your company, all of whom build custom vessels to British and European pressure standards.
One written answer. Two or three names. That is the shortlist.
If you are one of the names, you are on the shortlist before your competitors know the enquiry exists. If you are not, there is no second page to be found on. Ranking got you onto a list the buyer still had to read. AEO is about being the recommendation itself, and that is a different job.
What actually decides whether AI tools mention you
Answer engines do not take your word for anything. They weigh what your site says, how clearly it says it, and what the rest of the web says about you. These are the levers that move it.
-
Answers a machine can lift
Pages written so a clear, complete passage can be quoted on its own. A question answered in the first two sentences beats one buried in paragraph nine.
-
Structured data
Schema markup that tells machines in plain terms what you make, where you are and who you serve, instead of leaving them to guess from the page.
-
Clear entity and brand signals
One consistent company name, address and description everywhere it appears, so there is no doubt about who you are and what you do.
-
Mentions on sources these systems trust
Trade directories, industry press and association listings. Answer engines lean on third parties to decide who is credible, so those references count.
-
An open door for AI crawlers
A site the answer engines' own crawlers can reach and read. Plenty of sites block them without knowing, and an unreadable site cannot be cited.
-
Real expertise, written down
The questions your sales engineers answer on the phone every week, answered on your site. That knowledge is the raw material; everything above is packaging.
AEO does not replace SEO. It sits on top of it.
Answer engines learn about you the same way search engines always have: by crawling a fast, well structured, well referenced website.
A site that is technically sound, quick to load and clearly written is exactly the site an AI system finds easiest to understand and safest to cite. So the foundations are shared, and skipping them to chase AI visibility is building the roof first.
That is why we treat the two as one programme rather than rival line items. Our SEO work keeps you visible where buyers still search; the AEO work makes that same content ready to be quoted where they now ask. Neither channel is going away, and you should not have to pick one.
What we do, and what we will not claim
We start by asking the tools your buyers use the questions your buyers ask, and recording what comes back. Sometimes a competitor is being named for work you do better. Sometimes nobody is named at all, which is an open goal.
Then we do the work: structured data across the site, key pages rewritten so the answer to a real buyer question can be lifted straight off them, your company described consistently everywhere it appears, references built on the sources these systems already trust, and the technical checks that make sure AI crawlers can actually read what we have written. Then we ask the same questions again, and keep asking, because these systems change constantly.
What we will not do is promise you a citation. Nobody controls what an answer engine says, and anyone who guarantees a mention is guessing on your budget. What we can do is make you the easiest credible answer for it to give.

Ask ChatGPT who makes what you make
Try it now, in your buyer's words. If your company is not in the answer, that is the gap. Tell us what you make and we will show you what the AI tools currently say about your market, and what it would take to change it.
